The Role of Community Support in Mental Health Recovery

Mental health recovery is a journey no one should face alone. For those struggling, the path to healing can often feel overwhelming, isolating, and uncertain. It’s during these difficult times that the power of community truly shines. A supportive community becomes more than just a resource. It offers hope, understanding, and a vital sense of belonging.

At NAYMH (New American Youth Mental Health), we intimately understand the profound challenges of mental health struggles, especially within immigrant communities like the Bhutanese refugees in Central Ohio. We have faced unimaginable suffering—displacement from the only home we knew, the heartbreaking loss of loved ones, and the overwhelming task of rebuilding our lives in a foreign land, all while grappling with a new culture and language for the second time. These experiences, often buried beneath the weight of stigma, can leave deep emotional scars, leading to unbearable isolation, crippling depression, and, in some tragic cases, thoughts of ending one’s life.

For immigrants, mental health often takes a backseat to more pressing concerns. The immediate demands of survival—finding employment, securing housing, learning a new language, and navigating an unfamiliar system—can overshadow emotional well-being. As we prioritize basic needs: mental health struggles are often pushed aside. The stigma surrounding mental health in many immigrant communities only deepens this issue, leaving struggles unspoken and too often untreated.

Opening to loved ones and surrounding ourselves with those who respect and understand us can be a powerful remedy. By sharing our feelings with those who care, we invite their support, and that connection can be transformative. It reminds us that we are not alone, that our struggles are seen, and that a community stands ready to support us. Being in the presence of people who respect our journey and understand the unique challenges we face creates an environment where true healing can begin.

Our work at NAYMH centers on creating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone feels understood and supported. We offer peer support groups where individuals can share their stories in a judgment-free space so every experience is heard and respected. Community events hosted by Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio and other such organizations provide opportunities to build connections and foster relationships for both older and younger generations. Doing so has helped combat the feelings of isolation that so often accompany mental health struggles in our community.

For the Bhutanese- Nepali community, these efforts are particularly vital. According to data from the NIH released in 2018, the suicide rate among resettled Bhutanese refugees is 24.4 per 100,000—twice the rate of the general U.S. population. Disturbingly, this trend appears to have worsened since 2018, with concerns that many cases may go unreported, meaning the actual numbers could be even higher. The rising suicide rate among Bhutanese refugees in the U.S. underscores the critical need for culturally sensitive mental health support. Many in this community face unique challenges, including isolation (feeling of not having anyone to talk to or share our thoughts efficiently with) and the cultural stigma surrounding mental health. This stigma, which often demonizes or dismisses mental health issues, can make seeking help feel impossible.

We are committed to establishing effective mental health intervention programs like the Arogya Clinic, which serves as a vital lifeline for those who might otherwise feel isolated from essential support. Held every Tuesday, the Arogya Clinic offers comprehensive healthcare and mental health services that are culturally competent and tailored to the unique needs of new Americans. Staffed by physicians and nurses from the Bhutanese-Nepali community, alongside medical residency students from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, the clinic ensures that patients receive compassionate care that honors their cultural backgrounds while addressing both their mental and physical health needs.

The work at the Arogya Clinic goes beyond treating symptoms; it creates a sanctuary where individuals feel seen, valued, and supported. We provide self-care training and mental health education that resonate with their lived experiences, empowering them to navigate a new environment while honoring their heritage. At the Arogya Clinic, we believe in fostering hope and connection, ensuring that healing is not just a process but a shared journey

We believe that the strength of a community lies in its ability to support and uplift its members, especially during their most challenging times. By organizing local events, advocating for mental health awareness, and providing resources that are accessible and relevant; we aim to build a community that not only values mental health but actively supports those in need.

To anyone who is struggling: your pain is real, and your feelings are valid. Recovery is a journey that can be challenging, but you don’t have to face it alone. With the support of a compassionate community, there is always hope and a path forward. By opening up to loved ones and nurturing connections with those who understand and respect you, you can discover the strength to heal. Together, we can foster a resilient and caring community that embraces mental health as a shared responsibility, paving the way for healing, recovery, and a brighter future.
