Bipolar Disorder

  • Causes extreme mood swings: emotional highs (hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood changes can affect sleep, energy, behavior, and judgment.
    • Hypomanic: Euphoric, high energy, unusually irritable, decreased need for sleep, abnormally jumpy 
    • Depressive Episode: Feelings of sadness and hopelessness, insomnia or sleeping too much, indecisiveness, restlessness 
  • Children + teens: Harder to determine for children and teens. They have Hypomanic and depressive episodes but are varied compared to adults. The most prominent feature of bipolar disorder include severe mood swings that are different from their usual mood swings
  • Types: 
    • Bipolar I Disorder: Have had at least one maniac episode that may proceed with a hypomania or depressive episode. Mania may trigger psychosis 
    • Bipolar II disorder: Have had at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode, but never a manic episode.
    • Cyclothymic Disorder: Have Had at least 2 years of many hypomanic and depressive episodes (thought less severe than major depression).
